SYTYCD Season 5 - Top 6 Results

By the end of tonight’s episode, we’ll know which four dancers are in the finale next week. We’re nervous. But before that, we’ll also get to see the Emmy-nominated performances from last season, as well as a performance by Sean Paul.

The show opens with a group performance choreographed by Tyce Diorio. It’s pretty, but the painfully dull music nearly puts us to sleep. Oh well, it could have been much worse.

One girl will be sent to safety immediately tonight. We expect it to be Kayla since she seems to be the most obvious choice, but it turns out to be Jeanine who’s the first dancer in the finale.

SYTYCD Season 5 - Top 6

Semifinal week already… doesn’t seem possible! Unfortunately, this week’s guest judge is Lil C. He’s easily our least favorite judge/choreographer on this show. We don’t look forward to hearing him ramble and use as many nonsensical big words as possible for the next two hours.

The top three guys open the show with a jazz routine choreographed by Sonya Tayek. And it’s a great way to kick things off! Their timing is impeccable, the routine is really fun to watch, and it’s just all-around great. Evan stands out, but all three do a fantastic job. Our rating: 10/10

Jeanine and Ade are next with a samba. Jeanine’s dress really distracts from her dancing, but that actually might be a good thing. This is less than stellar. There’s not much of a connection between them, and the whole thing seems kind of awkward. Our rating: 7/10

SYTYCD Season 5 - Top 8 Results

Tonight marks the 100th episode of the show. Hard to believe it’s been five seasons now. To celebrate the occasion, many of the contestants from all four past seasons are sitting in the audience.

The festivities begin with a Mia Michaels group routine. It’s really good, in a creepy kind of way- which we’ve really come to expect from Mia’s choreography. It’s a great way to start the show.

After some highlights from all five seasons of the show, it’s time to get down to business and find out the results for the girls. Melissa and Jeanine are safe, leaving Kayla and Janette in the bottom two.

Episode number 99 kicks off with an extra guest judge: Ellen DeGeneres. Should be interesting. She’s joined by Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy and Mia Michaels.

The show kicks off with a group routine choreographed by Travis Wall. It’s weird, and we like it. Travis has certainly come a long way since his days as a contestant on the show. His choreography is fantastic! Our rating: 9/10

Janette and Evan are the first couple to perform tonight- a jazz routine. Their timing is perfect and the choreography looks almost like stop motion. It’s really entertaining. Our rating: 9/10

Kayla’s solo is much more entertaining than most of the others we’ve seen from her. In fact, we really like it! Our rating: 9/10

Tonight, we won’t be joined by Nigel Lythgoe. He’s in England receiving an honorary doctorate of arts at the University of Bedfordshire. But not to worry, Mary Murphy and Debbie Allen are still with us.

The group performance tonight is weird, and not in a good way. Imagine our surprise when we learn it was choreographed by Wade and Amanda Robson. Really? That was pretty crappy, for a Wade piece. We’re disappointed.

Before we get to the results, Cat announces that the show has received several Emmy nominations this year. Four for choreography by Mia Michaels, Tabitha & Napoleon, Tyce Diorio and Dmitry Chaplin, and one for the makeup department. Very cool.

SYTYCD Season 5 - Top 10

Lots of changes this week. New partnerships, which are drawn from a hat. The judges no longer decide who goes home- that’s up to the audience. And we’ll be seeing solos from all ten dancers, as well as performances from the top five girls and the top five guys. Tonight’s judges are Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy and Debbie Allen.

The top five girls open the show with a Bollywood performance. It’s really weird, but we like it. It’s also really fast, and we’re impressed with how well they pull it off. Our rating: 9/10

Kayla and Evan are the first new couple to perform. They’ve brought us a Viennese waltz. Should be… interesting, considering the massive height difference between them. But, surprisingly, it’s actually very graceful and beautiful. It’s so perfectly timed with the music that it’s almost mesmerizing. Our rating: 9/10

SYTYCD Season 5 - Top 12 Results

At first glance, we think tonight’s group performance was probably choroegraphed by Wade Robson- it’s THAT good! But surprisingly, it was actually Tabitha and Napoleon. Color us intrigued. Usually we’re not big fans of their work.

A couple of side notes: first, today is Nigel’s 60th birthday. Wow. He doesn’t look it. And secondly, an announcement about the rumors that there would be a Michael Jackson tribute special. Turns out it won’t be happening because either Sony or his family would not release the music. Boo. Hiss. That would have been amazing.

Time to get down to business. Caitlin and Jason are in the bottom three. Brandon and Janette are not. No big surprises there. Jeanine and Phillip are also in the bottom three, while Randi and Evan are safe. Surprisingly, Melissa and Ade round out the bottom three, leaving Kayla and Kupono safe.

SYTYCD Season 5 - Top 12

Tonight, for the first time, each couple will be dancing twice. Also, this will be the last time our current couples will dance together. Starting next week, they’ll draw new partners for each performance.

Tonight’s guest judge is Tyce Diorio. Finally, someone to be excited about! We wish he could be a regular judge every week. He’s so entertaining.

First up tonight are Melissa and Ade. For their first performance, they’re dancing a disco routine- and it’s one of the better ones we’ve seen. They’re both really impressive, except for when Melissa falls at the very end. But since it was just during her last pose, not really a big deal. Our rating: 9/10
