SYTYCD Season 6 - Top 8
In another twist for tonight’s show, each couple will be dancing to one remixed song during one performance. And we care because… why?
Also, some injury news this week. Ashleigh has dislocated her shoulder, and despite her insistence that she feels fine and could dance, her doctor will not clear her to do so until after she’s had an MRI. However, there will still be a voting line open for Ashleigh so viewers can vote for her based on past performances if they want to see her in next week’s finale. (Speaking of which, why is the top 6 the finale this year?)
Kathryn and Ryan kick things off with a disco. It starts off too slow, and by the time it gets into it we’re not really all that interested any more. We don’t see a lot of chemistry here, and a couple of the lifts seem awkward. Not one of the best starts to the show we’ve seen. Our rating: 7/10
Mollee and Jakob’s Viennese waltz is beautiful. They make a great couple and are extremely graceful, and it turns out to be one of the best waltz performances we’ve seen on the show. The last lift in particular is amazing. Our rating: 9/10
Ashleigh comes back to remind us that we can still vote for her based on past performances, even though she won’t be dancing tonight. She would have been the first solo of the evening.
We’ve been looking forward to Ellenore and Legacy’s contemporary routine since we heard about it earlier this week, and we’re not at all disappointed. They’re our two favorites this season, and it’s awesome to see them together. And they’re so perfect for this choreography! There’s nothing about this routine that we would change. Our rating: 10/10
Jakob’s solo displays his usual passion and grace. We always look forward to his solos, and this is one of our favorites from him. Our rating: 9/10
Ashleigh was paired with Russell this week, but since she can’t dance, Shane Sparks’ assistant takes her place for a hip hop routine. It’s every other hip hop we’ve ever seen, and we’re bored. There’s nothing here that would make us even think about picking up the phone and voting. Our rating: 5/10
We say this about Mollee’s solo almost every week, but someone should really remind her that posing and dancing are two different things. We’re never terribly impressed with her solos, and tonight is no different. Our rating: 5/10
Kathryn and Ryan return with a cha cha, and it’s much better than their earlier performance tonight. The chemistry is definitely there on this one, and the whole thing is overall more fun to watch. There are a couple of things that don’t look much like cha cha to us, but for the most part this is really good. Our rating: 8/10
Legacy’s solo tonight is unfortunately not one of his best. Usually he’s more unique and entertaining than this, but it’s still not bad. Our rating: 7/10
Ellenore is always so full of energy and originality. Her solos are really fun to watch. This one is one of the better solos we’ve seen tonight. Our rating: 8/10
Russell decides to do his usual krump solo… in a Santa suit. Cheesy. Awkward. Boo. Hiss. We don’t like it at all. Our rating: 4/10
Back to Mollee and Jakob, and this round they’re performing a Broadway number. We’re not entirely sold on it. Partly because of the terrible music, and partly because there are things that just don’t seem quite right to us. The judges love it though, so what do we know? Our rating: 7/10
Like we already said after Mollee’s solo… dancing is dancing. Rolling on the floor is not dancing. Someone should let Kathryn in on that little secret. Her solo is not a big standout for tonight. Our rating: 6/10
Ellenore and Legacy are back for their last performance tonight, and it’s a hip hop. We’re not crazy about the concept or the choreography- it’s just too “out there” for us. The judges seem to agree. This is a bit of a letdown after their amazing first performance. Our rating: 7/10
Ryan performs the last solo of the evening. It’s not one of his best, though it’s not terrible either. We’re just afraid he’s not pushing himself to stand out quite enough at this stage of the competition. However, it’s really cute when he makes a plea for people to vote for Ashleigh. Our rating: 7/10
For his Bollywood routine, Russell performs with another choreographer’s assistant. Kudos to him for having worked with so many different people this week and pulling it off. We just wish he wasn’t a krumper by trade, because he’s so good at everything else! This choreography is really interesting and fun to watch, and even though his partner does this for a living, we find ourselves watching Russell instead. Our rating: 9/10
Tomorrow night, Idol winner Kris Allen performs and we find out who’s in this season’s finale!
