SYTYCD Season 6 - Finale Results
Two more hours until we crown the next winner- although, we’re pretty sure we already know what’s going to happen. Besides revealing the final results, we’ll also see performances from Leona Lewis, Adam Lambert, Mary J. Blige and Jennifer Lopez, as well as revisiting some of the judges’ favorite dances from throughout the season.
First we go back to top 14 week for a group performance. This piece sort of sums up the way we’ve felt about the entire season- it’s kind of forgettable. Actually, we HAD forgotten about this until seeing it again tonight, and the same goes for some of these dancers. Sad, considering it hasn’t even been very long since they were all competing on the show.
After a recap of last night, it’s time to start seeing the judges’ favorite performances. Lil C is up first. Joy. Predictably, he picks the hip hop piece performed by Kevin, Legacy and Russell in the first show of the season. This seems better now, but it’s still not really anything we’d write home about.
We are, however, really excited to see Adam’s first favorite again- it’s Ellenore and Jakob’s contemporary piece choreographed by Sonya Tayeh. This is so fascinating, and we’re so happy to have another chance to watch it. We love them as a couple and they’re our top two favorites from the entire season.
One of Nigel’s favorites is the tap routine from the first show, performed by Phillip, Bianca and Peter. It’s really pretty boring. Tap is cool and all, but since it’s sort of a limited style, it just doesn’t seem right for this show. Also, we still find Bianca really annoying.
For the first time, we’re seeing a new routine tonight. It’s from Ashleigh and Ryan, who danced together for the first time on the show last night. But Mary liked seeing them together so much that she wants to see them in their own style, so they perform a jive piece we haven’t seen on the show before. It’s nice to see them together, but we actually preferred the performance from last night and would have rather seen that again.
The first guest performer of the evening is Leona Lewis, singing “I See You,” which is the theme from Avatar. It’s freaking terrible. The song is bad, the lyrics are worse, and her vocals are God-awful. It’s a really good thing this isn’t American Idol, because she’d be packing her bags before the song even ended.
The only guest dance performance tonight is from… who else but the Groovaloos. Do they really need to be EVERYWHERE? We realize they’re legendary, but if you’ve seen them once, you’ve seen them a million times. We’re bored.
Another of Nigel’s favorites is Kathryn and Jakob’s beautiful contemporary piece from last night. This is still fresh in our minds, but we love having another chance to see it because it’s absolutely breathtaking. There’s so much emotion behind it, and that’s a very large part of what makes a great dancer.
Time for a favorite from Tyce- he chooses Mollee and Nathan’s Bollywood piece. We remember this being more impressive. It starts out dramatic, but then just goes cheesy. Not one of our favorites tonight.
The moment has arrived. Time for some results. But as the top 6 approach the stage, we learn that Russell has hurt his knee tonight, quite badly. Ryan helps him stand on stage with the rest of the group. Sixth place goes to… Ryan.
And this is what we’ve really been looking forward to tonight- Adam Lambert’s performance of “Whataya Want From Me.” He’s been everywhere with this song lately, but we love it. The outfit and makeup are fantastic- we especially enjoy the smudged makeup under one eye, complete with rhinestone, strategically placed to look like a tear. Very savvy, Mr. Lambert. Very entertaining. We expect nothing less.
After a reel of high and low points from the season, we learn that our fifth place dancer is Ashleigh. We’re not surprised.
Adam wants to see Ellenore and Legacy’s Travis Wall contemporary piece again. Yay! We were hoping someone would! This was our favorite routine of the season, and seeing it again does not detract from it at all. They’re incredible and we would have loved to see Legacy in the finale tonight.
Debbie chooses to see Noelle and Russell’s African jazz again. Since Russell is injured tonight, we just go back and watch the tape of the original performance. But that’s okay- this was really entertaining and we enjoy watching it again.
4th place goes to Ellenore. We would have liked to see her place higher than this, but again, we’re not really surprised.
We’re surprised by Lil C’s request to see the contemporary piece performed by Ariana, Channing, Jakob and Nathan again. Doesn’t seem like something he’d be into. And really, we’re not either. There’s just not togetherness, it’s too many people onstage at a time, and it doesn’t look choreographed- in a bad way. We didn’t care for this the first time around, and we’re not sold on it tonight.
In another surprising turn, Mary wants to see Kathryn and Russell’s hip hop from last night again. It’s a tape again, due to Russell’s injury earlier tonight. We didn’t really care much for this last night, and we’re not wild about seeing it again now. Oh well, can’t win them all.
We’re bored before Cat even finishes announcing Mary J. Blige’s performance of “I Am.” This is akin to watching someone’s granny get drunk and attempt to sing karaoke. Oh well, at least these other guest performers are making Adam Lambert look good. Not that he needs any help there.
The last favorite pick of the night goes to Nigel. He chooses the Wade Robson piece performed by the original top 20. Billy Bell is included in this footage, and we’re so excited to see him again. We really hope he’s well enough to come back next season.
Third place goes to Kathryn. We’re shocked, since we fully expected this to be Jakob. But we’re glad, since we prefer Jakob.
Jennifer Lopez’s performance is a joke. It’s cheesy, and looks like it was “masterminded” for a 14-year-old. And could she be any more obvious about her lipsyncing? No, probably not. But, at least we know we’re almost to the end of the show. Also, it’s kind of cool that she brings back several female dancers, both from this season and seasons past.
Jakob and Russell return to the stage for the final time. After some footage of both their journeys (because the show hasn’t already been long enough), it’s time for another confetti tornado. Because, ya know, no Fox competition show would be complete without one.
And the winner is…
Russell. Not surprised. Not shocked. Not terribly excited. But he did work hard, so we’re happy for him. Congrats, Russell!
