SYTYCD Season 6 - Top 14
To start the show tonight, we’re treated to some pictures of the judges as kids. Nigel is throwing up some “gang signs,” Mary hasn’t changed much if at all, and Adam is hilarious. Well, that was fun for a minute.
Now it’s down to business. Ashleigh and Jakob kick things off with a hip hop performance. It reminds us a bit of the “Bleeding Love” piece performed by Chelsea and Mark, and while it’s not quite as good as that one, it is pretty strong. It’s more believable than we expected it to be, and Ashleigh in particular has come a long way since the beginning of the season. Our rating: 8/10
Next are Karen and Kevin with a Broadway number. It’s really cute, and it shows some versatility. Unfortunately, it doesn’t really show quite enough character. We don’t think it’s as bad as the judges make it out to be, but we’re not sure it’ll be a standout tonight either. Our rating: 7/10
Noelle and Russell are getting another chance at foxtrot tonight. It’ll be a first for Noelle, since she was injured the first week of the show and Russell performed with his choreographer. Unfortunately, this is… really dull. It’s danced well and everything, but it’s just so boring to watch. As we write this review, we hardly even remember it. Our rating: 6/10
The music for Channing and Victor’s jazz piece is horrendous, but we really like the concept and the choreography. Channing really comes out of her shell this week, which is nice. They work well together and the whole thing comes across much better than last week’s performance. Our rating: 9/10
Kathryn and Legacy are next with a paso doble. For some reason, we have high expectations of Legacy for this. Turns out it’s not quite as strong as we would have liked… but having said that, it’s still really good, especially considering how difficult paso doble has been for some couples in the past. From time to time they seem like they’re concentrating a bit too hard, but we can forgive that. Our rating: 8/10
Ellenore and Ryan perform a Travis Wall contemporary piece… and they nail it. They seem much more comfortable than they were last week, and the timing is nearly perfect throughout the entire performance. It’s nice to see them be able to redeem themselves in such a major way. Our rating: 10/10
Mollee and Nathan close the show again tonight with a pop jazz piece. The whole thing reeks of a setup, in our opinion. Last position, majorly popular song, and it goes to the kid who got reamed by Nigel for being a teenybopper magnet last week. Call us conspiracy theorists, but we’re just not buying it. However, they still perform well, and it’s a large improvement on last week, so props for that. Our rating: 7/10
Tomorrow night, the top 14 becomes the top 12. The season is flying by.
